Omar al-Bashir seeks medical treatment abroad
Former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, 82, is seeking permission to travel abroad for medical treatment, according to his lawyer, Mohamed El-Hassan El-Amin. Bashir was recently transferred from a hospital in Merowe to the Aliaa Specialist Military Hospital in Omdurman, near Khartoum, following a decline in his health.
El-Amin stated that Bashir requires specific medical tests and cardiac imaging that are currently unavailable in Sudanese hospitals due to the ongoing conflict. The legal team has not requested a specific destination, noting that Bashir could be treated in any country capable of providing the necessary care.
Bashir's family issued a statement describing his need for medical attention abroad as “urgent and pressing.” However, they noted that no official permission for his departure has been granted by the authorities.
Bashir, who ruled Sudan for three decades following a 1989 coup, remains wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity related to the Darfur conflict. He has been in Sudanese custody since being ousted in 2019.
