Omar García Harfuch reports decline in Mexican homicide rates
Omar García Harfuch, Mexico's Secretary of Security and Protection of Citizens, presented security results during a session at the Chamber of Deputies. Official data covering October 1, 2024, to August 31, 2026, indicates a significant reduction in violent crime. Specifically, the average daily number of intentional homicides dropped from 86 to 40 in August 2026, representing an approximate 53 percent decrease.
During this period, authorities reported the arrest of over 67,200 individuals for high-impact crimes, the seizure of 34,300 firearms, and the recovery of 534 tons of drugs. Additionally, 2,071 clandestine laboratories were disabled and 207 priority targets were detained. The Secretary also addressed ongoing investigations into fuel smuggling and security preparations for the 2027 elections.
In a separate political development, Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña criticized the perceived immunity granted to García Harfuch by the media and opposition. Noroña argued that while he faces personal scrutiny, the Secretary of Security avoids direct accountability for national insecurity. These comments coincide with political speculation regarding García Harfuch's potential candidacy for the 2030 presidential succession.
