Omar González returns to Venezuela after year in exile

Opposition leader Omar González returned to Venezuela on Friday, August 28, after more than a year in exile. He arrived at the José Antonio Anzoátegui International Airport in Barcelona, Anzoátegui state, where he was met by hundreds of Vente Venezuela militants and political figures, including Henry Alviárez and Juan Pablo Guanipa.

González was one of six collaborators of María Corina Machado who sought refuge in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas in March 2024. Following a prolonged period of siege and difficult living conditions, the group escaped the country in May 2025 through a clandestine mission known as ‘Operación Guacamaya’.

Upon his arrival, González stated that his return is intended to support the democratic struggle and accompany the leadership of María Corina Machado. He noted that Machado had asked him to ‘pave the way’ for her own eventual return to the country. U.S. Senator Rick Scott has called for security guarantees for the politician following his return.
