Omar Maturano calls for indefinite general strike in Argentina

Omar Maturano, the general secretary of the railway union La Fraternidad, is pressuring the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) to initiate an indefinite general strike. Maturano argues that isolated sectoral protests are insufficient to counter the economic policies of President Javier Milei’s administration.

During radio interviews, Maturano criticized the leadership of the CGT for a perceived lack of firmness, stating that union leaders need more courage to face the government. He called for a sustained strike to force a change in official economic direction, specifically targeting privatization efforts and labor deregulation.

Maturano clarified that his proposal is not intended to overthrow the government, noting that the administration should serve its term before upcoming elections. However, he expressed frustration with provincial governors, accusing them of betraying workers' interests by supporting the 'Ley Bases' and labor modernization laws in Congress.
