Omarchy Linux distro receives $8M boost via new foundation

Omarchy, a new Linux distribution based on Arch Linux, Hyprland, and Quickshell, has secured $8 million in funding through the newly established Omacom Foundation. Created by David Heinemeier Hansson, the co-founder of 37signals and creator of Ruby on Rails, the foundation is supported by eight technology industry leaders who have each contributed $1 million.

Founding patrons include Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, Block co-founder Jack Dorsey, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, and 37signals CEO Jason Fried.

Omarchy is designed as an opinionated, developer-oriented environment that emphasizes keyboard-driven workflows, tiling window management, and terminal applications. The operating system aims to provide a high-performance, highly customizable user interface that is accessible to both seasoned users and novices, offering compatibility with Steam and Proton for gaming and the ability to run Windows via Docker containers.
