Omas for Future lead nationwide human chains for climate action
On German Unity Day, more than 12,000 people participated in nationwide human chains organized by the group ‘Omas for Future’ as part of the ‘Es brennt’ (It is burning) action day. The event, coordinated by ‘Gemeinsam Zukunft gestalten’, involved 42 regional groups across Germany, with demonstrations held in locations ranging from Lübeck and Wilhelmshaven to Freiburg and Munich.
Participants held up white sheets of paper to symbolize a ‘new beginning’ focused on protecting natural resources, fostering respectful coexistence, and advocating for policies that prioritize the well-being of current and future generations. In one regional section in Aachen, organizers collected 124 messages written on these sheets to be sent to the Federal Chancellery.
While the nationwide movement saw significant turnout, local participation varied. In Konstanz, approximately 300 people gathered in Herosépark and on the Fahrradbrücke to protest, highlighting concerns regarding current climate policies and the gap between political measures and the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
