Cibinong Prison luxury facilities uncovered by Ombudsman RI
The Ombudsman of Indonesia has uncovered luxury facilities at the Cibinong Class IIA Prison in Bogor, West Java, during a recent unannounced inspection. The findings include several buildings resembling mini-villas or apartments, equipped with amenities such as living rooms, kitchens, large televisions, air conditioning, and refrigerators. Some inmates reportedly paid fees to occupy these exclusive spaces.
During the inspection, the Ombudsman team encountered resistance, including physical contact that resulted in injuries to two staff members. The Ombudsman also reported finding alcoholic beverages inside one of the luxury units and noted that some facilities, such as a gym and a mini-golf area, were under development. Additionally, there are allegations of weekly extortion fees of Rp150,000 being charged to inmates.
The Ombudsman has issued an ultimatum for the luxury structures to be demolished within one month and has called for a restructuring of the prison leadership. In response, the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) has formed a special team to conduct a thorough verification of the facilities, administration, and security standards at the prison to ensure accountability and equality for all inmates.
