Ombudsman RI addresses labor rights and dual government roles

The Indonesian Ombudsman (Ombudsman RI) is addressing two major areas of administrative concern: labor rights and the practice of holding dual positions within the government and state-owned enterprises (BUMN).

Regarding labor issues, Ombudsman member Robert Na Endi Jaweng reported that between 2024 and August 2026, the institution received 692 labor-related reports, with 279 specifically concerning workers' rights. To address these issues, including severance pay disputes, the Ombudsman held a coordination meeting with the Ministry of Manpower and regional labor offices to seek objective solutions and ensure constitutional protections for workers.

Separately, the Ombudsman is highlighting the risks of dual roles held by cabinet members and active bureaucrats within BUMN structures. Following an audience with a civil society coalition—including Transparency International Indonesia, Celios, and Themis Indonesia—Ombudsman member Partono noted that such practices increase conflict-of-interest risks and undermine oversight. The institution is urging the government to adhere to a 2025 Constitutional Court ruling that prohibits deputy ministers from holding concurrent positions in BUMN, noting a two-year transition period has been granted.
