Omdia forecasts growth in TV panels and foldable smartphones

Market research firm Omdia projects significant shifts in the display and smartphone sectors through 2028. In the display market, demand for LCD TV panels is expected to remain strong in the second half of 2026, driven by aggressive purchasing plans from TV brands and original equipment manufacturers. This demand is anticipated to help panel manufacturers maintain an average capacity utilization of approximately 80 percent.

Conversely, the smartphone display market faces challenges due to memory shortages and rising costs. While OLED technology is gaining market share in IT products such as notebooks, tablets, and monitors, overall display revenue for 2026 may decline. However, total display area is expected to grow as average screen sizes increase.

The foldable smartphone market is also poised for growth. Omdia forecasts that global shipments of foldable devices will double to 36 million units by 2028, up from 18.2 million in 2025. This growth is largely attributed to a shift toward “wide-format” book-type devices, which offer more practical outer displays. While the foldable market saw a decline in the first half of 2026, total shipments for the full year are expected to recover to over 22 million units.
