Omega-3 and aspirin may replace antibiotics for severe gum disease

A new study published in the Journal of Periodontology suggests that combining omega-3 supplements with low-dose aspirin may serve as an effective alternative to antibiotics for treating severe periodontitis.

In a study involving 109 patients with severe gum disease, researchers compared four treatment approaches. One group received standard scaling and root planing with a placebo, while another received the same treatment plus a 14-day course of antibiotics (metronidazole and amoxicillin). A third group received scaling plus 3 grams of daily omega-3 and low-dose aspirin for six months. The fourth group received a combination of antibiotics and the supplements.

After one year, the results showed that the antibiotic group had a 58% success rate, nearly identical to the 57.7% success rate observed in the omega-3 and aspirin group. In contrast, only 23.1% of patients receiving only the standard treatment and a placebo reached the therapeutic goal. The study noted that the therapeutic effects of the supplements remained stable even six months after discontinuation. Researchers suggest this combination could help reduce global reliance on antibiotics, addressing the growing threat of bacterial resistance.
