Omega-3 fatty acids and their role in inflammation and immunity
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fats that play a critical role in regulating immune responses and controlling inflammation. Key components include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). While ALA is found in plant sources, EPA and DHA are primarily obtained from marine sources and serve as precursors to compounds that inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines.
These nutrients are vital for cellular function, acting as essential components of cell membranes. DHA is particularly concentrated in the brain and retina. Maintaining a proper balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is important, as many Western diets are high in omega-6, which can promote pro-inflammatory processes. Adequate intake of omega-3s has been linked to the reduction of inflammatory markers such as CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6.
