Omega Traders launches new lentil processing plant in Sri Lanka
Omega Traders is launching a new lentil and orid dhal processing plant in Wattala, Sri Lanka, to mark its 45th anniversary. The facility, scheduled for inauguration on September 18, 2026, features modern machinery for cleaning, sorting, and quality control, including advanced color-sorting equipment and an in-house laboratory.
The plant has a production capacity of approximately 150 metric tonnes per eight-hour shift. This expansion aims to enhance both the volume and quality of processed goods, allowing the company to better serve its network of wholesalers and retailers.
The project arrives as Sri Lanka manages significant import dependencies for pulses. While dhal imports have fluctuated, Australia remains a primary supplier of lentils to the country. By establishing domestic processing capabilities, the facility seeks to capture more economic value within Sri Lanka by positioning manufacturing between international suppliers and local consumers.
