Omiš, Croatia, features dramatic canyons and Adriatic coastline

Omiš, located in central-southern Dalmatia along the Adriatic Sea, is a coastal town characterized by its unique geography where the Cetina River meets the sea. The landscape is defined by a sharp contrast between the blue Adriatic and steep limestone cliffs of the Mosor massif, which create deep canyons and vertical rock walls behind the town.

Historically known as Almissa, the settlement has a layered past involving Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, and various other European influences. During the Middle Ages, between 1100 and 1400, the area gained fame as a stronghold for Dalmatian pirates. Key historical landmarks include the Mirabella Fortress (also known as Peovica), situated 200 meters above sea level to monitor the Brač channel.

Today, the town serves as a strategic base for tourism, offering activities such as river kayaking, mountain hiking, and boat trips to nearby islands including Brač, Hvar, Šolta, and Vis.
