Uborak landfill and Omiš wildfire recovery efforts underway

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, authorities are analyzing 72 agricultural samples collected near the Uborak landfill in Mostar to detect heavy metal contamination, such as arsenic, lead, and cadmium. This investigation follows a major fire at the landfill in late June. Residents have expressed significant concern regarding the safety of crops like grapes, figs, and vegetables grown within 300 meters of the site. Results from the Federal Agrometeorological Institute are expected next week.

In Croatia, the government has launched an intervention measure to support businesses in Omiš following a devastating wildfire. The Ministry of Labour will provide monthly subsidies of up to 1,500 euros per employee to help businesses maintain permanent staff through May 2027. Additionally, local communities and neighboring municipalities like Dugi Rat have provided financial aid to affected families. While recovery efforts continue, residents in the Omiš area remain concerned about potential landslides and rockfalls on scorched slopes following heavy rains.
