OmniVision announces OAX7700 AI chip for vehicle parking surveillance
OmniVision has announced the OAX7700, an ultra-low-power application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed to provide always-on AI-based parking surveillance for vehicles. Unveiled at AutoSens Europe, the chip is intended to upgrade existing exterior camera systems, such as surround-view systems, into intelligent edge AI solutions.
The OAX7700 integrates a neural processing unit (NPU) to support functions including human presence detection, object detection, and distance measurement. In its always-on mode, the system monitors surroundings with minimal power consumption, which is reportedly 97% lower than current market solutions. When a trigger event occurs, the system can record five to ten seconds of pre-roll video to help validate the event and reduce false alarms caused by environmental factors like wind or debris.
Designed to support software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures, the chip allows developers to deploy custom AI algorithms and receive over-the-air (OTA) updates. Mass production of the OAX7700 is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
