Omoyele Sowore challenges Tinubu’s absence and joins New York protest
Nigerian activist and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has raised constitutional concerns regarding President Bola Tinubu’s extended absence from Nigeria. Sowore argues that because Tinubu has been abroad for over three weeks, the National Assembly should invoke constitutional provisions to appoint Vice President Kashim Shettima as acting president. Sowore contends that the president failed to formally notify the Senate President and House Speaker of his absence within the required 21-day period, noting that the constitution does not recognize the concept of a ‘working vacation’ as an exception to these rules.
In a separate development, Sowore has expanded his activism internationally. While in New York, United States, he participated in a ‘Free Palestine’ demonstration. During the protest, Sowore expressed support for Palestinian human rights and condemned the actions of the Israeli state in Gaza, stating that his participation was intended to show that Nigerians stand for justice and human rights.
