OMV Petrom expands green hydrogen capacity at Petrobrazi refinery

OMV Petrom has received seven 5 MW electrolysis modules from Germany-based Neuman & Esser for its Petrobrazi refinery in Romania. This second 35 MW electrolyzer project will increase the refinery’s total green hydrogen production capacity to 55 MW, when combined with a previously announced 20 MW unit.

The project is supported by approximately €29 million in non-reimbursable financing from Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Construction, logistics, and assembly are being managed by Kraftanlagen Romania in partnership with local suppliers.

Once operational, the facility is expected to produce roughly 4,700 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using renewable electricity. The total capacity of 55 MW is projected to generate about 8,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. This hydrogen will be used in refinery processes to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). These fuels are expected to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by at least 65% compared to conventional alternatives.
