OMV proceeds with hydrogen plant construction in Bruck an der Leitha
OMV is continuing the construction of its 140-megawatt green hydrogen plant in Bruck an der Leitha, despite the exit of Masdar from the project. Siemens Energy has delivered the first modules for the facility, which will include eight electrolyzers using proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This supply will be transported via a 22-kilometer pipeline to the Schwechat refinery, where it aims to replace approximately one-third of the hydrogen currently produced from fossil fuels. The project is estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by 150,000 tons per year.
Financing for the project includes a 450 million euro loan and 123 million euros in Austrian government subsidies. While the project is a key component of OMV’s goal to reach climate neutrality by 2050, economic challenges remain, as green hydrogen production costs are currently more than double those of hydrogen derived from natural gas.
