Oncologist Michelino De Laurentiis says chemotherapy patients can safely vacation
Michelino De Laurentiis, director of the Breast Oncology Department at the Istituto Pascale in Naples, advises that patients undergoing chemotherapy can include holidays in their treatment plan when they follow specific medical guidelines. He stresses that quality of life is an integral part of therapy and that activities once considered off‑limits, such as beach trips, can be managed safely.
Key precautions include avoiding the hottest parts of the day, staying well‑hydrated, using high‑protection sunscreen, wearing hats and suitable clothing, and coordinating travel with treatment schedules to ensure access to medical assistance if needed. De Laurentiis notes that each case must be evaluated individually, taking into account therapy type, immune status and any surgical wounds.
The guidance aims to help patients maintain social connections and personal interests while receiving care, turning well‑planned vacations into therapeutic support rather than a prohibited luxury.
