Oncologist sentenced for defrauding ADSE of nearly 500,000 euros
The Aveiro Court has sentenced a 61-year-old oncologist to a two-year suspended prison sentence for defrauding ADSE, the healthcare subsystem for public employees, of nearly half a million euros.
Between 2008 and 2017, the doctor was found to have improperly received 451,300 euros in fees related to chemotherapy treatments for 32 patients. According to the prosecution, the doctor charged patients fees for monitoring treatments and then instructed them to submit the invoices to ADSE for reimbursement. The court noted that the doctor attempted to bill an additional 13,100 euros, which ADSE blocked after discovering the irregularities.
In addition to the suspended sentence, the defendant was ordered to pay 451,300 euros to the State, representing the financial advantage obtained through the crimes. While the doctor's medical service company was also charged, it was acquitted of the crimes.
