Oncologists highlight cancer prevention through lifestyle changes
Medical experts in Romania are highlighting the importance of lifestyle modifications and evidence-based treatments in the fight against cancer. Oncologists emphasize that while genetic factors are unchangeable, environmental factors, stress, radiation, and nutrition can be managed to reduce risks.
Dr. Mirela Movanu warns against the dangerous myth that naturopathic remedies can replace validated oncological treatments, noting that relying on unproven methods has led to unfavorable outcomes for patients. She stresses that a cancer diagnosis is not a sentence, as many cases are treatable or even curable if detected early through regular screening.
Additionally, Dr. Marina Sekașceva notes that lifestyle changes could potentially prevent 40-50% of cancer cases. Key preventative measures include maintaining a healthy weight to combat obesity risks, increasing physical activity, and reducing the consumption of processed meats, refined carbohydrates, and sugary drinks. These recommendations align with World Health Organization estimates that approximately 38% of cancer cases are preventable through the avoidance of specific risk factors.
