Oncology clinicians discuss evolving cancer treatment landscapes
Medical professionals are navigating a complex landscape of expanding cancer treatment options alongside significant challenges in patient access and toxicity management.
In discussions regarding third-line metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), clinicians reviewed the efficacy of various regimens for mismatch repair–proficient or microsatellite-stable disease. Key therapies discussed included trifluridine/tipiracil plus bevacizumab, fruquintinib, and regorafenib. Experts noted that while clinical trials show improved median overall survival for these options, the patient populations in trials—often possessing higher performance statuses—may not fully represent the more fragile patients frequently seen in clinical practice.
In Florida, clinicians highlighted a paradox where an increase in oncology and hematology approvals is met with growing barriers to care. While new therapies, such as trastuzumab deruxtecan for early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer, have shown unprecedented pathologic complete response rates, demographic shifts and payer restrictions are making these advancements difficult for some patients to access. Additionally, providers are focusing on managing specific side effects, such as interstitial lung disease, associated with newer targeted therapies.
