Ondo Finance faces leadership dispute following founder's death

A leadership dispute at Ondo Finance, a tokenized asset platform, has highlighted significant governance and succession vulnerabilities within the cryptocurrency industry. The conflict follows the unexpected death of founder Nathan Allman in May 2026 at age 32.

Kathleen Allman, the founder’s mother and administrator of his estate, filed a lawsuit in the Delaware Court of Chancery seeking to remove Ian De Bode from the CEO position. The complaint alleges that De Bode, who previously served as president, unlawfully attempted to seize control of the company and act as the sole director without valid board approval. De Bode has rejected these allegations, calling them ‘meritless’ and stating that the company maintains the support of its lead investors.

In response to the legal challenge, a newly constituted board voted to remove De Bode and install Kathleen Allman as interim CEO. Legal experts note that the situation underscores a common ‘blind spot’ in crypto firms, where rapid growth often leads to inadequate estate planning and centralized governance structures, such as one-person boards, which can create crises when a key founder passes away.
