Ondo State Governor signs new electric power sector law

Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has signed the Ondo State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law, 2026. This legislation aims to modernize the state’s electricity framework, aligning it with Nigeria’s Electricity Act of 2023 to encourage private investment and industrialization.

The law establishes the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) as an independent body to oversee tariffs, licenses, mini-grids, and renewable energy. To support a competitive market, the amendment also provides for the creation of a State Independent System Operator (SISO) and a State Market Operator (SMO).

Key provisions include compulsory metering for both grid-connected and off-grid areas, ensuring consumers have direct service and payment relationships with providers. The law also introduces legal protections for electricity infrastructure funded by private individuals or communities and establishes penalties for the sabotage of power facilities.
