Ondo State orders Igbokoda River fumigation after plane crash

The Ondo State Government has ordered the immediate fumigation of the Igbokoda River and the distribution of emergency health kits to residents following a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash last week. The directive comes after local community members reported a severe, suffocating stench emanating from the water, raising fears of a public health crisis and waterborne disease outbreaks.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa instructed the Ministries of Environment and Health to begin fumigation and distribute nose masks and medical kits to protect families from inhaling potentially toxic fumes. Additionally, the Ilaje Local Government has been directed to mobilize water tankers to provide clean, potable drinking water to affected riverine communities if laboratory tests confirm the river has been contaminated by aviation fuel or debris. These interim relief measures will remain in place until a permanent environmental cleanup is completed.
