Ondokuz Mayıs University performs first robotic lung surgery in Black Sea region

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Faculty of Medicine Hospital has performed the first robotic lung surgery in the Black Sea region. A surgical team led by Prof. Dr. Burçin Çelik successfully completed a robotic lobectomy on a 57-year-old male patient to treat a tumor located in the lower lobe of the right lung.

The procedure utilized the newly acquired da Vinci Robotic Surgery System. This technology is expected to be used across multiple medical disciplines at the hospital, including general surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric surgery, and otorhinolaryngology (ENT).

By introducing this advanced robotic system, OMÜ becomes the first university in the Black Sea region to offer such technology, which is expected to reduce the need for local patients to travel to other cities for specialized surgical treatments. The system will be used for minimally invasive procedures involving organs within the chest cavity, such as the lungs, mediastinum, thymus, and esophagus.
