Ondokuz Mayıs University proposes renaming Samsun’s Kurtuluş Yolu

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) has launched the first session of a project aimed at revitalizing the ‘Kurtuluş Yolu’ (Path of Liberation) as a significant cultural heritage route. Supported by the TÜBİTAK 2237A Scientific Education Activities Support Program and the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, the initiative focuses on the use of cultural heritage sites in out-of-class education.

Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Cevdet Yılmaz has proposed renaming the route to ‘Millî Mücadele Yolu’ (National Struggle Path) or ‘Millî Mücadele Güzergâhı’ (National Struggle Route). These suggestions will be submitted to the relevant authorities. The project aims to preserve the historical and geographical significance of Samsun as the starting point of the National Struggle.

The five-day program involves 20 teachers and teacher candidates from various provinces in Turkey, alongside 13 academics from four different universities. The multidisciplinary study covers geography, history, Turkish, social sciences, tourism guidance, and mathematics to examine the route’s educational and touristic potential.
