One Big Beautiful Bill Act introduces agricultural and tax reforms

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), enacted on July 4, 2025, has introduced significant changes to U.S. economic and agricultural policy. In the agricultural sector, the legislation has increased reference prices and improved the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) farm income safety nets. For the 2025 crop year, producers are slated to receive the higher of the ARC or PLC payments regardless of prior election decisions. PLC payments are contingent on the Market Year Average (MYA) price being lower than the Effective Reference Price, with payments expected in October 2026.

In terms of personal finance and taxation, the OBBBA established “Trump Accounts,” which are tax vehicles intended to encourage savings for individuals from birth. While the Treasury Department is currently releasing operational guidelines, critics, including the President and CEO of the Tax Foundation, argue that the new regulations add unnecessary complexity to the U.S. savings system and suggest that the U.S. should instead look to models used in the UK and Canada.
