One dead as illegal miners clash with Darkokrom residents in Ghana
A violent confrontation erupted in Darkokrom, a community in Ghana's Atiwa East District, when residents confronted suspected illegal miners (galamseyers). The clash left 34‑year‑old farmer Edwine Atteh Djaba dead and several others, including 76‑year‑old Samuel Nartay Dapaah, with gunshot injuries.
Residents accuse the miners of encroaching on farmland, destroying cocoa, plantain and cassava crops, and polluting streams that supply drinking water. Community spokesperson Doku Peter urged the Inspector‑General of Police and security agencies to intervene, stop the illegal mining activities, and restore law and order. Police have not yet issued an official comment.
