ONE Nuclear begins environmental evaluation for Louisiana SMR project

ONE Nuclear Energy has initiated the environmental evaluation process for Project Amberjack, a proposed small modular reactor (SMR) campus in Louisiana. The project, located within the Ascension-Iberville industrial corridor, aims to produce up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity.

This announcement follows the company’s recent unveiling of Project Cayman, a 2.88-gigawatt natural gas-fired power plant in the same state. ONE Nuclear’s strategy involves integrating natural gas-fired generation onto the grid first, with plans to transition to SMR technology as it matures.

The company has already completed preliminary siting analyses and conceptual layouts. The next phase of development includes environmental field studies, SMR technology screening, and interconnection analysis to prepare for engagement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and other federal agencies. Over the next three months, the company intends to meet with local officials, landowners, and residents to foster community engagement.
