One Piece production undergoes major shifts in Netflix adaptation and anime release strategy
The production of the Netflix live-action adaptation of ‘One Piece’ faced significant challenges during its first season. Showrunner Steve Maeda revealed that the project nearly failed due to executive decisions to reduce the budget and cut the episode count from ten to eight. Maeda noted that the resulting scripts drifted away from the original story, leading to fears of cancellation. However, creator Eiichiro Oda intervened after reviewing the drafts, stating they did not align with his previous approvals, which prompted Netflix to course-correct and rewrite the season.
Separately, the ‘One Piece’ anime production is undergoing a major structural change. To prioritize animation quality and avoid the narrative pacing issues caused by a weekly release schedule, Toei Animation will limit the series to 26 episodes per year. This new strategy aims to allow the animation to catch up with the manga's progression, reducing the need for filler episodes. Under this new model, new episodes are expected to return in 2027.
