One Year After Devastating Broșteni Floods, Suceava County Rebuilds Infrastructure

On July 28, 2025, heavy rains caused the River Neagra to surge to a historic flow of 280 cubic metres per second, flooding Broșteni and neighboring villages in Suceava County, Romania. The flood destroyed homes, roads, bridges and utilities, resulting in loss of life and widespread damage.

County Council President Gheorghe Șoldan reported that more than 20 million lei have been allocated for reconstruction. Key works include clearing and rebuilding sections of county roads DJ 177A, DJ 174 and DJ 174E, restoring access to two bridges, and repairing water and electricity networks. Within weeks, all major routes were reopened and temporary crossings were installed where bridges were lost. The effort has been described as a massive solidarity project, with assistance from local authorities, NGOs, religious groups and citizens from across the country.
