Oneil Cruz faces scrutiny over fatal accident allegations and MLB performance

Pittsburgh Pirates player Oneil Cruz is facing scrutiny following a ProPublica report regarding a 2020 fatal car accident in Bani, Dominican Republic. The report alleges that Cruz, who was reportedly intoxicated and driving during a COVID-19 curfew, rear-ended a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of Daniela Pérez García, Deby Beato Charles, and Yohan Saba Mercado.

According to the investigation, Cruz allegedly worked with a fixer, businessman Santo Caraballo, to settle with the victims' families. The families reportedly received a total of $66,000 to withdraw legal claims. Although Cruz faced charges including reckless driving and was briefly held in custody, he was released on a $34,000 bond, and the case was dismissed 33 days before his MLB debut.

On the field, Cruz has shown significant offensive improvement, particularly against left-handed pitching, with a career-best .851 OPS. Analysts suggest the Pirates should prioritize a long-term contract to retain the center fielder, who is projected to become a free agent after the 2028 season.
