ONI prohibits use of citizen data for political purposes

The Office national d’identification (ONI) has issued a circular directive prohibiting its staff from using citizens' personal data for political purposes. The agency emphasized the obligations of neutrality, impartiality, and confidentiality required of its employees as the country approaches upcoming elections.

This warning follows reports of anomalies regarding National Unique Identification Numbers (NINU). Some political parties reported that individuals appeared on multiple membership lists, raising concerns about how this data was obtained and whether consent was given. While the ONI noted that these discrepancies do not automatically confirm a database breach or theft, the agency has strictly forbidden employees from stealing, copying, transferring, selling, or disclosing any files or documents accessed during their duties.

Employees found violating these instructions face severe administrative sanctions, including potential dismissal, as well as possible legal prosecution.
