Onion prices stabilize following rapid market increases
Onion prices are stabilizing following a period of rapid increases, according to Mike de Koster of WDK Onions. While prices are leveling off, significant variations remain based on size, availability, and destination, with price differences of approximately 4–5 cents being noted.
Market participants are currently navigating a shift in size distribution. Large onions are appearing in 10–20% of consignments in regions spanning from Utrecht to northern France, but ‘extra’ large sizes are expected to be very scarce this season. Consumers may need to adjust to smaller seed onion sizes compared to previous years.
Demand remains broad and strong, led by Africa, with emerging demand for larger sizes within Europe. Regarding quality, the current season has been generally good, though some batches have shown signs of Fusarium.
