Onkalo nuclear waste repository nears operation in Finland

Finland is nearing a global milestone with the Onkalo repository, the world’s first industrial-scale permanent storage facility for spent nuclear fuel. Located 430 meters underground, the facility has received a safety assessment from the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), leaving it just one step away from obtaining an operating license.

Developed by the company Posiva, the project has been underway for 40 years. The repository will house spent fuel from the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant, owned by the state energy group Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) and the state energy company Fortum. The storage method utilizes a multi-barrier system designed to isolate radioactive materials from the environment for up to 100,000 years.

The success of the Onkalo project is drawing significant international interest from the global nuclear energy community as nations seek long-term solutions for nuclear waste management.
