Onkyo launches new amplifier series for 80th anniversary

To celebrate its 80th anniversary, Onkyo is reintroducing stereo amplifiers through two new series. The brand, founded in 1946 in Osaka by Takeshi Godai, faced significant financial pressure that led to the bankruptcy of its Japanese parent company in 2022.

Following the bankruptcy, the brand was acquired by the American Premium Audio Company (a subsidiary of Voxx, which is part of the Gentex Corporation) in collaboration with the Japanese company Sharp. Under this new ownership, Onkyo is returning to its roots in high-fidelity audio.

The new Icon series features Class AB amplifiers built on a shared platform. Key technical specifications include an AKM D/A converter, HDMI ARC, and support for various streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal, and Qobuz Connect. The models also feature Onkyo’s patented Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry (DIDRC) to minimize high-frequency noise from digital sources. The lineup includes the P-80 preamplifier, the M-80 power amplifier, and the A-50 integrated amplifier.
