Europe faces 23 billion euro tax loss from illegal online gambling

A study by Gaming Compliance International, presented to the European Parliament, reveals that European member states could lose nearly 23 billion euros in tax revenue in 2025 due to the growth of unregulated gambling markets.
The unregulated sector has seen a 14% increase in just one year, reaching a total turnover of 91.6 billion euros. Globally, the value of illegal gambling is projected to reach 5.9 trillion dollars in 2025. Experts warn that over 6,200 illegal operators are currently targeting European consumers, often utilizing social networks, illegal streaming platforms, and cryptocurrencies to bypass regulatory oversight.
Beyond the economic impact, authorities emphasize the significant risks to consumers. Tom De Clercq, president of the Belgian Association of Gaming Operators, noted that players on illegal sites lack essential protections, including age verification, responsible gaming monitoring, payment guarantees, and safeguards against fraud or money laundering.
