Online romance and friendship scams target social media users
Authorities are warning the public about the rising prevalence of romance and friendship scams conducted through social media, dating apps, and online communities. Fraudsters often build seemingly genuine relationships by engaging in shared interests or offering intense affection before transitioning to financial exploitation.
Common tactics include creating fake profiles, using fabricated emergencies, or suggesting lucrative investment opportunities. Scammers may pressure victims to send money via gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps. Warning signs include excessive affection early in a relationship, claims of working abroad or in the military, and repeated excuses to avoid video calls.
In Ghana, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) advises citizens to report suspected scams by calling 292. Experts recommend verifying identities and setting firm boundaries when online connections begin to request financial assistance or secrecy.
