Abdul Azeez pleads not guilty to Tabung Haji abuse of power charges
Former Tabung Haji chairman Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has pleaded not guilty in a Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to charges of abusing his position. The charges stem from 2014, alleging he used his role to secure the chairmanship of Putrajaya Perdana Berhad, which included an annual salary of RM690,000, a BMW 7 Series, and a permanent driver. He is also accused of influencing the Tabung Haji Board to approve investments of up to RM193.5 million in the company, in which he allegedly held an interest.
In a related development, police have arrested five individuals, including the former chairman, former CEO, and former CFO of Tabung Haji, to assist in ongoing investigations. Three of those detained are being questioned regarding the 2017 annual profit distributions (hibah), while two others are under investigation for potential money laundering offenses under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA).
