Online violence against women and girls rises globally

Reports highlight the escalating severity of online violence against women and girls, characterized by misogyny, threats, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate content. In the United Kingdom, a report titled ‘Dangerous by Design’ by the charity Refuge and the End Violence Against Women coalition reveals that 36% of women have experienced online violence against women and girls (VAWG), a figure that rises to 47% for women aged 16 to 24.

The research indicates that tech platforms may be facilitating this abuse. Approximately 21% of social media users aged 16–24 reported being frequently recommended content that is degrading or sexually violent toward women. Additionally, the report notes a link to domestic abuse, with 20% of victims stating the perpetrator was a former partner.

In Togo, similar patterns of cyberharassment affect women, particularly those active in public spaces. Victims report profound psychological impacts, including trauma, fear of digital connectivity, isolation, and loss of self-confidence. The violence often manifests through coordinated attacks, identity theft, and the spread of rumors.
