INE establishes rules and timelines for Mexico's 2027 federal pre-campaigns
The National Electoral Institute (INE) has established the rules and timelines for the selection of federal candidates for the 2026-2027 electoral process. Pre-campaigns are scheduled to run from January 4 to February 12, 2027. Political parties must determine their internal selection methods at least 30 days before the start of pre-campaigns and notify the INE within 72 hours of their decision.
In Mexico, political tensions have risen as the PRI and Somos parties accused INE President Guadalupe Taddei of restricting debate and dialogue by conducting General Council sessions strictly virtually. The PRI has also sought legal measures against Morena coordinators, alleging premature campaign activities. Meanwhile, the Electoral Tribunal ruled that a PRI campaign spot criticizing Morena does not constitute slander, granting the party more leeway in its communication strategy.
