Ons Island celebrates patron saint festivities after dispute with regional authorities

Residents of Ons Island celebrated their patron saint festivities in honor of San Xaquín and Santa Ana following a dispute with regional authorities. The Xunta de Galicia and the Illas Atlánticas National Park administration had initially attempted to restrict the Saturday night festivities, citing concerns that music would cause excessive noise within the protected national park area.

Following protests by local residents and negotiations with the Ministry of Environment, an agreement was reached with the Council of Bueu regarding speaker placement, allowing the celebrations to proceed. The events included a tribute to the island's lighthouse keepers, a religious mass, a procession, and a traditional floral carpet that attracted tourists.

The celebrations also featured a memorial service at the cemetery for deceased islanders and musical performances by various groups. Despite intermittent rain, the festivities were completed without major incidents.
