Ons Island festivities permitted with strict noise controls

The Xunta de Galicia has modified its initial authorization to allow musical celebrations during the San Xaquín de Ons festivities on Ons Island. The decision follows local tension after the Ministry of Environment initially prohibited the use of loudspeakers and sound systems for the 2026 edition.

The restriction was based on concerns that the inclusion of DJs, rather than traditional live music like mariachis or brass bands, would create noise levels incompatible with the environmental protections of the National Park's management plans. This sparked protests from residents, who blocked visitor landings to demand the preservation of their local traditions.

Following technical reviews and requests from the Bueu City Council, the Xunta has granted an extraordinary and punctual authorization that permits the musical events provided that decibel levels are strictly controlled to comply with environmental regulations.
