Europe prepares for solar power drop during upcoming eclipse
European electricity grid operators are preparing for a significant drop in solar power generation due to a solar eclipse scheduled for Wednesday. The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) estimates that solar output across the continent could decrease by as much as 9.7 GW during the event.
In the Iberian Peninsula, Red Eléctrica de España and other operators expect a reduction of up to 5 GW. In Portugal, REN anticipates a loss of approximately 450 MW in centralized solar generation, which represents about 7% of the country's predicted consumption during that period and roughly 45% of its expected solar production for that specific timeframe. To maintain grid stability and balance supply and demand, operators plan to mobilize additional hydraulic and thermal reserves and adjust frequency restoration reserves.
Telecommunications companies in Portugal, including NOS and Vodafone Portugal, have also implemented contingency plans. NOS is focusing reinforcement and supervision efforts on the districts of Vila Real and Bragança to manage potential traffic spikes from increased crowds, while Vodafone is monitoring the network in real-time to ensure connectivity in high-concentration observation areas.
