Onshore wind energy faces economic and regulatory challenges

A study titled ‘Beauty and the Blades: The Local Economic Impact of Wind Turbines’ has raised concerns regarding the economic effects of onshore wind farms on rural areas. Research conducted in Italy indicated that visible wind turbines led to a 20% drop in tourism numbers and a 19% decrease in tourist spending. The study also noted a 4% reduction in house prices and a 1% decline in population, with the most significant impacts peaking seven years after installation.

In the energy sector, German firm Energiekontor significantly reduced its 2026 profit forecast from €40-60 million to €5-10 million. The company attributed this downgrade to delayed grid connection dates for three Scottish wind farm projects, stemming from legal challenges against an overhead line permit in Dumfries and Galloway.

Additionally, the energy firm Caeli is proposing the ‘Eaubrink’ project in the UK, which aims to install up to 40 wind turbines between King’s Lynn and Downham Market. The project, spanning approximately 8,400 acres, is intended to generate enough power for nearly 150,000 homes.
