Ontario advances Highway 69 expansion with rail relocation

Ontario is advancing the expansion of Highway 69, moving toward the four-laning of the route between Parry Sound and Sudbury. A key component of this phase involves relocating a section of CN railway track within the Township of Mowat and the Municipality of Killarney. This relocation is necessary to accommodate a new interchange at Highway 522.

The project aims to complete the remaining 68 kilometres of the highway that currently consist of only two lanes. Once the rail work—which includes laying new track and installing signals—is finished, construction on the Highway 522 interchange can proceed. To date, 84 kilometres of the 152-kilometre project have been completed.

Industry representatives, including the Ontario Road Builders’ Association, noted that the project is intended to support Northern Ontario’s mining and tourism industries while providing a safer, more reliable connection to Southern Ontario.
