Ontario allocates millions for wetland restoration in Oshawa and Brampton
The Government of Ontario has announced significant investments to support wetland restoration and climate resilience in several municipalities.
In Oshawa, over $1 million in provincial funding will be used to strengthen the ecological health of the Second Marsh. In partnership with the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA), the project aims to enhance habitat for species at risk, such as the American Eel and Blanding’s Turtle, while improving long-term climate resilience. This provincial support complements previous investments from the Canada Water Agency.
In Brampton, nearly $1.2 million is being allocated to enhance the Heart Lake Wetlands Complex and Spring Creek. This initiative, led by the City of Brampton and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), focuses on restoring shorelines, upgrading stormwater infrastructure, and removing invasive species. The project is designed to reduce flood risks to local roads and protect against extreme weather events like drought.
