Ontario and California address campus protest and antisemitism policies

Educational authorities in Ontario and California are addressing the management of campus protests and antisemitism following recent incidents and demonstrations.

In Ontario, the provincial government is pushing for greater accountability from universities to combat antisemitism. This follows incidents such as the vandalism of mezuzahs at Wilfrid Laurier University. While Bill 166 was passed to address hate, new directives from the Minister of Colleges emphasize enforcement, requiring institutions to report on antisemitism complaints and improve training to ensure student safety.

In California, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed Assembly Bill 2551, which sought to increase student input and transparency regarding campus protest rules. The bill was designed to address policies implemented following 2024 anti-Israel protests within the California State University and University of California systems. The vetoed legislation would have required the CSU system to hold an open forum for student feedback on protest restrictions and expanded annual reporting on code of conduct violations by the end of 2027. Newsom stated that existing processes are sufficient for campus communities to provide perspective to policy leaders.
