Ontario announces reforms to modernize electricity distribution sector

The Ontario government has announced a package of legislative and regulatory reforms aimed at strengthening the province's electricity distribution sector. The initiative seeks to address rising energy demands, aging infrastructure, and workforce pressures. Projections indicate that Ontario will need to add grid capacity equivalent to the City of Toronto every six years to sustain economic growth.

Key components of the plan include elevating standards across the energy system to enhance access to electricity, improving consumer protections, and increasing utility productivity. The government intends to leverage purchasing power to support 'Made-in-Canada' and 'Made-in-Ontario' products, a strategic move designed to bolster domestic supply chains in response to potential U.S. tariffs.

Clean Energy Canada has responded positively to the reforms, noting that improved governance transparency and support for long-term planning could enhance efficiency across the province's 58 utilities. The organization also highlighted the potential for distributed energy resources (DERs)—such as smart thermostats and home batteries—to save distributors an estimated $3.5 billion over the next 20 years by reducing grid strain.
